Clarence Clemons, the warm-toned saxophonist and pivotal member of Bruce Springsteen?s E-Street Band died late yesterday of complications from a stroke. He was 69 years old.
Born ?Clarence Anicholas Clemons, Jr on January 11, 1942 in Norfolk Virginia ?the Big Man?s introduction to Bruce and what fans say was his musical destiny has passed into legend. Clarence strode on-stage at a concert in Asbury Park in 1972, wowed the audience and Bruce with his skills and a legend was born.
The tale was later retold in the song ?10th Avenue Freeze-Out,? from ?Born to Run,? and that?s Clarence?s shoulder over which Bruce is seen on the cover.
Clarence discovered the saxophone at age 9, and by his late teens his skills were without peer. He toyed with the idea of a career in football while at college in Maryland but a car crash ended those dreams and music became his first love.
?I don?t think it?s only my saxophone,? Clemons told reporters back in 2008, ?It?s who I am. My spiritual guide old me my purpose in life was to bring joy into the world.?
