MJ Family Offended by 'A.I.' Pepsi Moment

UPDATE: Idol contestant James Durbin just tweeted, "For anyone talkin..I said pepsi NOT MJ! I have no disrespect for Michael. I grew up singing his art. I guess youll take it how you want it..." and then followed that up with, "Talkin about MJs passing is too soon. Making a reference to an incident 25 years ago..not too soon. The stab was at pepsi people."

Michael Jackson's family is offended by a comment made on "American Idol" last night by a contestant, who made light of MJ's devastating injury that triggered years of drug abuse.

Pepsi Moments
If you saw the show, James Durbin told Ryan Seacrest after his performance, "I have a lot of hairspray in my hair to keep it from jumping around -- so much so, the one thing I was worried about was having a 'Pepsi moment.'"

The "Pepsi moment" is a reference to the 1984 incident where Michael Jackson's hair caught on fire during the filming of a Pepsi commercial, severely burning his scalp -- an injury that triggered an addiction to prescription drugs that may have ultimately taken his life.

A Jackson family rep tells TMZ, "We were shocked to see this. It's nothing to make light of and everybody should be focusing on who was responsible for Michael's death."

The rep says Joe was particularly upset that producers didn't take the remark out of the West Coast feed.

Carrie Ann Inaba has got engaged live on TV.

The 'Dancing With the Stars' judge burst into tears when her boyfriend Jesse Sloane - who she has been dating for two years - got down on one knee while she was filling in for Kelly Ripa co-hosting 'LIVE! With Regis and Kelly'.

In on the surprise proposal, the 43-year-old star's fellow presenter Regis Philbin read a letter from a supposed viewer who wanted to pop the question to his girlfriend of two years, but was unsure as to how to go about doing it.

Jesse then walked on to the set carrying a huge princess-cut engagement ring, as the show's lights dimmed and a group of violinists appeared.

I struggle to find the words to express what you mean to me. You're an inspiration. You're everything to me. Will you marry me?

He said: "I struggle to find the words to express what you mean to me. You're an inspiration. You're everything to me. Will you marry me?"

Accepting the proposal, a teary Carrie Ann said: "Yes. I will marry you."

However, she later admitted she had no idea she would be leaving the show with a new fiance in tow.

She explained: "I'm shocked. I should have thought something was up."

Earlier this month, Carrie Ann admitted she and 39-year-old accountant Jesse were planning a summer wedding on the beach, and are hoping their guests will jump into the ocean with them once they have made their vows.

She told Prevention magazine: "We're planning a summer wedding on the beach. There's something about looking into the vast blue ocean that always puts life into perspective. The fresh air and negative ions recharge the system.

"We want everyone to jump in the water with us after our vows, so it will have to be someplace warm and tropical."

HECWeb Conference for Entrepreneurs

This is a guest post by Klaragora of Girlz In Web, The NextWomen media partner in France. You can also read the original article in French here.

HECWeb1Last week, the groups HEC Entrepreneurship and HEC WEB organized a conference with the theme Opportunity, Creation & Development on the Internet: Lessons Learned From Entrepreneurs.

Greetings!

15 days ago at The Canteen, at an evening dedicated to the topic of geolocation, I made the acquaintance of Lys Ghamissou.

The roundtable on geolocation was not great, the speakers (Cityvox, Dismoio, Plyce, Restopolitain and Nomao) being reduced to self promotion in the absence of any high level view on the subject. It was a pity.

The meeting with Lys Ghamissou of HEC Entrepreneurship at The Canteen

However, as usual, a raft of interesting people were present. Most notably, I briefly saw our friend @ cath_woman and finally met again the newly turnedAmerican @ mgef amongst many others.

And some added bonuses, like our friend Lys. The latter is active in one of the (many) HEC alumni networks, dedicated to entrepreneurs: HEC Entrepreneurship.

Everyone knows HEC, but not everyone is aware of the network of associations around the ultra-dynamic school

See their calendar, (which rivals mine in terms of density!) and read all their news here.

Quick Focus on HEC Women, HEC Web and HEC Entrepreneurship

Before getting to the main subject of this article (that evening?s conference), a quick focus on three of the HEC associations:

You?re probably already familiar with HEC Women, led by vivacious founder and managing partner Sophie Reynal, aka @ Reynal. Find her on her site, blog, and Twitter (@ hecaufeminin).

HEC Women are entrepreneurs already regularly in the spotlight (see this post for a list of women who created ?businesses and, at the same time, employment and value for their shareholders.?

Among the HEC graduates, some have gone through the module or masters course HEC Entrepreneurs, others have benefited from the HEC Incubator ?

HEC Women is about career workshops, it?s international, it?s about networking, meetings with remarkable women (such as Sophie), the prize ?Trajectories HEC Women?, a newsletter ?

There is also HEC Web, which brings together passionate graduates and web professionals. More on this next time.

Finally there is the Enterprise Centre, part of HEC Entrepreneurship, which summarizes the entire HEC ecosystem for entrepreneurs.

HEC Entrepreneurship brings together some 400 entrepreneurs and professionals, aiming to support entrepreneurs and to ?encourage and provide practical solutions to achieve their project or develop their business.?

Conference with Lessons Learned From Web Entrepreneurs

In this context, (ah we reach the famous conference!), a conference was organized on ?Opportunity, creation and development on the Internet: Lessons Learned from Entrepreneurs.?

Four contractors were showcased and in attendance, including:

Nicolas Cohen (Ms Entrepreneur H01), co-founder of www.alittlemarket.com, the first French marketplace dedicated to handmade products. A Little Market allows independent designers to sell their creations directly. Similar to Etsy.com in the United States, which has been one of the great successes of the past five years, one of the characteristics of these sites is that they grow through word of mouth ensured by their community (no traffic charge).

Philippe Duhamel (MBA 96), co-founder of www.kadeal.com. A mashup of search engine Google, Salesforce, and Kompass, Kadeal is a new prospecting tool which identifies business and commercial contacts through semantic analysis of the B2B Web. In SaaS mode, to the delight of sales folks.

For the record, I refer you to the live-tweet # HECWeb that I used to feed from my account.

If you are interested in this topic, please post a comment; if there are volunteers, perhaps I?ll ITW Sophie Reynal ? why not?

Good afternoon!

Billy Joel cancels his memoir

Mar 31, 2011

It seems Billy Joel doesn't want to tell all, after all.

The Book of Joel, billed as an "emotional ride" that would detail the Piano Man's failed marriages and his battles with substance abuse, was set for publication in June. Earlier this month, HarperCollins revealed the cover photograph for the book, and Joel's editor promised it would contain details "he has never revealed before."

But in a statement to the AP today, Joel, 61, said he had changed his mind. "It took working on writing a book to make me realize that I'm not all that interested in talking about the past, and that the best expression of my life and its ups and downs has been and remains my music," he said.

HarperCollins confirms the deal had been canceled. Spokeswoman Tina Andreadis said Joel had turned in a finished manuscript, but that no copies had been printed. The publisher had planned a first printing of 250,000 copies.

Update: Judge Judy 'feeling better' in the hospital

Mar 30, 2011

Judge Judy was rushed from the set of her television show to the hospital today.

A receptionist at the Judge Judy show, Vanessa Pineda, confirmed to KTLA that Judy Sheindlin, 68, left the studios, but described the incident as a "family emergency."

"The judge was feeling nauseous and had some intestinal discomfort and decided to go to the hospital to get it checked out," Judge Judy's rep, Gary Rosen, told RadarOnline.com.

Judge Judy just called TMZ's Harvey Levin from her hospital bed to tell him she's fine, saying, "I'm just exhausted, and my body was telling me it needed a day to chill."

Sheindlin will stay at the hospital overnight for tests. She told TMZ, "I'm really fine. I wanted to go back to work this afternoon," adding, "I'm exhausted. I'm just tired.

UPDATE: Judy's spokesman, Gary Rosen, tells Lifeline Live he "just spoke to the judge who says she is feeling much better. She says all of the tests are negative and she's going home tomorrow. She will be back taping her show on April 12, as scheduled."

Kim Cattrall's 'Meet Monica Velour' co-star has revealed she gave him sex advice between takes on set.

Kim Cattrall's gave her 'Meet Monica Velour' co-star sex tips between takes.

The 'Sex and the City' actress plays a jaded former '80s porn star in the new movie and Dustin Ingram - who portrays the awkward teen who befriends his ageing idol - revealed his favourite moments on set were when they swapped erotic stories and Kim gave him some advice.

He told the New York Daily News newspaper: "We would talk about sex and swap stories and pointers and all this stuff."

We would talk about sex and swap stories and pointers and all this stuff.

The movie's director Keith Bearden revealed his best memory was when the two actors "made out" in the movie's "climactic kiss" scene and "we had to change reels of film and Dustin gets up and he has the hugest erection".

Although Dustin protested it wasn't true, the director quipped: "I'm an old man; I know [ardour] when I see it!"

However, Kim - who is best known for her raunchy role as maneater Samantha Jones in the 'Sex and the City' TV series and movies - was not impressed with either man's story and complained when she was questioned about them.

She said Dustin's story about swapping sex tips was "absolutely not true" and when asked about his alleged excitement during their love scene, she fumed to the New York Post newspaper: "You know, as a woman, I really find those questions offensive. As a woman, I find that really embarrassing [for you] to ask that."

Kim, 54, also took the time to rage against Hollywood's bias towards younger women, saying "Ask me about being a woman. Do you know what it's like to be 54 and marginalized? It doesn't get easier as you get older."

Bill Murray to Play Franklin Delano Roosevelt in Hyde Park on the Hudson(HMG Celebrity News) ? Taking on another dramatic role, New York magazine reports Bill Murray is set to portray polio-afflicted politician president Franklin Delano Roosevelt in an upcoming adaptation titled ?Hyde Park on the Hudson to be directed by Morning Glory?s Roger Michell.? Oddly the production will be bankrolled by Film4, who apparently passed on funding The King?s Speech in their eagerness to get this film which also features King George VI. Written by playwright Richard Nelson, the movie recounts a June 1939 weekend when King George VI and his queen visited President Franklin Roosevelt?s estate on the Hudson River, in upstate New York. The story, adapted from a British radio play, focuses on both the King?s visit and Roosevelt?s alleged affair with his distant cousin, Daisy aka Margaret Stuckley. The movie will begin filming in July and is expected for release in 2012.

Murray is also signed up for Wes Anderson?s next film, ?Moon Rise Kingdom,? and rumor is he is still holding up potential production on ?Ghostbusters 3?. Deadline reports that Murray ?still hasn?t contacted [Sony Pictures] to tell them if he?s even read the script,? which was reportedly delivered to him ?at the beginning of the (Read more...)

Airtime for controversial 'Kennedys'

By Bill Keveney, USA TODAY

This weekend, viewers can judge for themselves: The controversial eight-hour miniseries The Kennedys, starring Greg Kinnear as JFK and Katie Holmes as the first lady, premieres Sunday on Reelz (8 ET/PT).

  • Greg Kinnear portrays the 35th president, John F. Kennedy.

    Reelz Channel via AP

Reelz Channel via AP

Greg Kinnear portrays the 35th president, John F. Kennedy.

Despite attacks on the filmmakers' angles, it's neither a love letter nor a hatchet job but an honest story, says writer Stephen Kronish. "We wanted to show these people as personalities, as characters, who had great gifts and flaws. We wanted (to make) as realistic a portrayal of the family and its dynamic as we could."

Before filming had even started, a Kennedy adviser and some historians were criticizing the accuracy of an early script. A website urged readers to protest what it called "right-wing character assassination" to the History Channel, which had commissioned the project. In January, History dropped it, saying in a statement, "After viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand." Little-known Reelz eventually picked it up.

"My personal feeling is that when one sees all eight hours, one will come away with a greater understanding as to who these people were," Kronish says. "I do think that the overall impression will be a positive one, because I think it should be. But we didn't try to cook the books to make it come out" one way or another.

The Kennedys charts the course from John F. Kennedy's election as president in 1960, with explanatory flashbacks, to brother Robert's (Barry Pepper) assassination in 1968. Much of the focus is on the relationship between patriarch Joseph (Tom Wilkinson) and his sons. What may jump out at viewers are scenes describing JFK's infidelity, including an affair with Marilyn Monroe, his use of pain-killing drugs and his father's speaking to a Mafia kingpin about his son's campaign.

Kronish and executive producer Joel Surnow (who worked together on 24) dispute complaints of inaccuracy. They say that the miniseries is drawn from reputable historians and reliable references and that a historian assigned by the History Channel signed off on their work. "We were scrutinized, vetted, put under the microscope basically on a word-by-word basis. There was so much level of detail that was required of us before they approved the scripts," Surnow says.

They acknowledge the project is historical drama, not documentary, that some characters are composites, and that there is no record of many private conversations, but that they are true to the known facts.

Surnow says his reputation as a conservative may have thrown up a red flag. "I always felt because of my known political leanings ... it might cause a problem somewhere down the line," Surnow says. "Camelot still is a revered and a treasured image for many people."

Kendra Defends The Boobs

Kendra Baskett talked to E!?s Marc Malkin about last night?s episode of Dancing With The Stars. Len Goodman made a rather silly comment regarding Kendra?s boobs, which Hef?s former girlfriend did not find funny. She told Malkin,

?I don?t understand how he?s commenting on my boobs and not Wendy [Williams]?s boobs or Kirstie [Alley]?s. We all have big boobs! That?s just the way it goes. I think he?s just being funny, and I even saw him on Jimmy Kimmel last night talking about my boobs again. I?m like, ?What is it about my boobs?? Just because I?m a Playboy girl they have to use my boobs as their little attack weapon thing.?

It?s been quite a journey so far for Kendra on DWTS. Aside from the unfair boob comments, Kendra has to seriously work on her posture for the dance numbers. Having played sports for most of her life, Kendra wasn?t used to always remaining upright. It?s especially tough with a child. First you?re pregnant, then you?re carrying the kid around. Standing up the straight is the last thing on one?s mind! But this is a huge learning experience for Kendra, who hopes to avoid elimination and take home the trophy.

Roberto Ramos: The Dora Generation: How Kids Helped Latinos Win the Census

In my last two HuffPost entries I addressed the stellar showing of Hispanics in the
2010 Census: 50 million strong, accounting for more than half the population growth in the United States over the past decade, and making staggering gains in crucial states like Texas and California as well as traditionally non-Hispanic states like North Carolina, Ohio and Indiana. Leading this growth are Latino children and youth, a segment that is not even yet old enough to vote, but who have a remarkable impact on today's trends, pop culture and economy.

Kids under 18 have accounted for a significant portion of Hispanic growth, and a large chunk of them are 5 and under: In California and Texas alone 90% of new births can claim Latino heritage. I like to call them the "Dora Generation," after the popular Nickelodeon cartoon character Dora the Explorer.

The show was devised over a decade ago and soon took off and became one of the most popular children's icons in history, spawning a multi-million dollar empire of products (books, dolls, clothing, games, CDs, backpacks) marketed equally to Hispanic and non-Hispanic parents and children. The Dora phenomenon continues unabated today with a new generation of kids following perfectly bilingual Dora and her sidekicks Boots, Diego and others in their adventures, being inspired by their curiosity, and taking on her Latino culture as their own.

Dora's original audience is now composed of tweens, and they represent an even more
crucial market for brands. Not only are they much more digitally savvy and media saturated than any generation that came before, this group is also much more likely to be multicultural. They were also raised with stories and trends that were more likely to draw from diversity: like Dora, of course. The Dora phenomenon, like this Census itself, signals an important threshold for the growing Latino influence in the mainstream.

What The Dora Generation Can Teach Business

? Kids marketing and multicultural marketing have become one, as most kids come from a multicultural background, especially Latino. Brands should tap into the unique experiences of these kids growing up in two worlds as fodder for product innovation; a new Dora might be next in line.
? Rethink your marketing strategies when speaking to moms. Ask yourself whether your brand is incorporating Latina cultural insights into your product development given that Latinas are the main growth pillar in the mommy segment.
? Dora is a smart girl and she knows there's money to be made by knowing other languages, especially in this tougher inter-connected global economy. This presents some product opportunities in the creation of bilingual educational toys for the kids, as well as language and cultural products for adults.
? Think of ways of incorporating Latin culture into the mainstream to engage both your Latino customers as well as mainstream audiences.
? For the media industry, Dora's success is a wake-up call to create more properties that are culturally rich and diverse, especially to reach U.S. born young Latinos -- many of them original Dora Generation kids -- looking to both connect with their culture and share it with their peers.
? Go green. Generation Dora has been raised to respect the environment and its inhabitants. Brands should expect to continue this engagement by coming up with cool and inspiring ways to tap into respect and curiosity for our planet. The growing Dora tweens will also challenge companies in the next generation of green marketing.
? Dora and her friends like to visit Latin America and the world. While the Census points a strong multicultural picture in the U.S., the global kids market is even stronger and growing faster. Companies should rethink how they approach international markets, and how these markets can also serve as product innovation fodder for what we promote back at home.

But perhaps most important, a focus on los amigos:

While the Census numbers fueled by the Dora Generation present a market that is growing, the Latino community and its children still face strong social obstacles including poverty and lack of access to education. As companies and brands engage Latino families, they must find ways of giving back and promote the full development of Latino kids. They represent the future of the Latino community and our nation. It is only by investing in Latino kids that the true power of Generation Dora will be felt and we can all enthusiastically say "Vmonos."

Jewel?s Dad Get?s A Reality Show!

Jewel's Dad Gets Reality Show

Discovery loves their rural shows, and has recently picked up two brand new ones!

The first one is about moonshiners who keep up the 200 year tradition in very remote places of Appalachia. Yes, even some of them aren't doing it legally! That one is aptly named Moonshiners.

But the real crown jewel of the two (lol, get it??) would have to be Mountain Men of Alaska, where the guys straight up live off the land: hunting, fishing, and doing whatever they can to get them through the winters. Pretty brutal stuff.

Men will actually be following Jewel, the famed singer's dad! His name is Atz Kilcher (her legal name is Jewel Kilcher) and he sounds like one tough dude. It'll be interesting to see him in his element!!

Atz, have fun! Catch tons of fish!

Are U excited for these shows??

Gov. Brown ends budget negotiations with GOP lawmakers

SACRAMENTO - Gov. Jerry Brown ended budget negotiations Tuesday with Republican lawmakers, casting doubt over what steps he and the Legislature will take to close the rest of California's deficit.

Brown issued a statement saying he had halted talks days after GOP leaders released a list of 53 demands they said had to be met in exchange for their support for a special election.

The Democratic governor and majority Democrats wanted to ask California voters in June to extend temporary tax increases enacted two years ago as part of their solution to close the deficit.

Brown said he supports some of the reforms sought by Republican lawmakers, including a state spending cap, changes to the pension system for public employees and streamlining business regulations.

But he said after progress was made on those issues, the Republicans issued a much longer wish list that included items not related to the state budget debate and corporate tax breaks that would cost the state billions of dollars a year. The governor concluded that further talks would be fruitless.

"Each and every Republican legislator I've spoken to believes that voters should not have this right to vote unless I agree to an ever-changing list of collateral demands," Brown said in his statement.

State Sen. Anthony Cannella, one of five Republicans who had been talking with Brown in recent weeks, responded by saying he also does not see a path to compromise.

Cannella, R-Ceres, blamed public employee unions, trial attorneys and other Democratic Party supporters for their "refusal to challenge the status quo" on GOP priorities that include pension reforms, a hard cap on state spending and measures to promote job creation

In ending the talks, Brown said he will focus his efforts in the coming weeks on "speaking directly to Californians and coming up with honest and real solutions to our budget crisis." His office did not immediately return a telephone call or emails seeking more information.

Two Republican votes in each house of the Legislature are needed to place a ballot measure before voters. Brown had been negotiating with five Republican state senators during the past few weeks, but the talks deteriorated over the weekend after the Senate GOP leadership offered its list of demands.

Vanessa Hudgens' Night Out in London

Looking to grab up some delicious eats, Vanessa Hudgens ventured out for a nighttime meal at a London, England restaurant on Tuesday evening (March 29).

Having flown into town earlier the same day to promote her new movie "Sucker Punch", the former Disney darling looked as cute as can be as she made her way through a hectic crowd of fans and photogs before finally making it safely inside the UK eatery.

As for her current love life happenings, Hudgens seems to have officially moved on from Zac Efron - as she and actor Josh Hutcherson have been spotted spending more and more time together over the past few weeks.

The ?Journey 2? co-stars recently fueled the relationship rumors when they were seen cheering on the L.A. Lakers together just days after enjoying a motorcycle ride on Hutcherson?s bike.

Like its characters, TV's 'Parenthood' struggles

By Marco R. della Cava, USA TODAY

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. Inside a cavernous soundstage sits a small bedroom. Cameras surround actors Lauren Graham and Mae Whitman, who play a single mother and her witty daughter on Parenthood, NBC's modern-day ode to thirtysomething-style family dramas dipped in comedy.

  • The family drama, starring Craig T. Nelson and Bonnie Bedelia, is rooted in the ebb and flow of everyday life.

The family drama, starring Craig T. Nelson and Bonnie Bedelia, is rooted in the ebb and flow of everyday life.

Graham: "I love taramosalata."

Whitman: "I'm not sure what that is. Is that like tiramisu, but smaller?"

Graham: "No. It's fish eggs, not an Italian dessert."

Whitman: "Oh. So it's like the exact opposite of what I thought."

Graham: "Duh."

It's funny dialogue ? except the cameramen are off duty. As are the actors. The fact that this personal exchange about confusing food names sounds as if it's ripped from a Parenthood script speaks volumes how the actors create the family vibe that distinguishes this series.

"The show doesn't strain or sensationalize," says Ron Howard, who produces the dramedy along with his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer. Imagine was behind the 1989 Steve Martin movie of the same name, which served as a loose framework for series creator Jason Katims. "Parenthood doesn't play for shock value," Howard says.

"It's about the meaning of life," Grazer adds.

Which could be why the show continues to fight for an audience ? averaging just under 7 million viewers ? as it waits for the network's decision in May about a third season (though its return on equally challenged NBC is likely).

Helping the cause: Richard Dreyfuss, who tonight (10 ET/PT) begins a four-episode arc as a theater producer and war buddy of patriarch Zeke Braverman, played by Craig T. Nelson. Dreyfuss says he was lured to this small-screen project by the cast ("I've known a bunch of them a long time") and the show's air of openness ("The first thing I did was change the way my character dressed, and they said fine").

Also in Parenthood's corner: Despite struggling in its time slot against CBS' The Good Wife, the show recently saw a 37% bump among younger viewers who recorded the program and watched within seven days.

"People may not watch us live as much, but it's clear they become deeply invested in the characters and check back," says executive producer Katims. He's also the man behind Friday Night Lights, another more-admired-than-watched drama that has survived thanks only to a partnership with DirecTV, which airs episodes well before NBC.

Stories that hit home

"Both my shows have struggled, but I do feel the network sees the value they bring," says Katims, whose connection to one big Parenthood theme ? the Braverman family's embrace of an autistic child ? is personal. His son, Sawyer, 14, is autistic.

"At first I wasn't sure I wanted to go there," Katims says. "But then I started to remember that everyone is dealing with something, and the goal of great TV is to reach a universal truth."

But life has become so full of uncomfortable truths that escapist TV, from crime dramas to reality shows, easily outpaces programming that mirrors our personal reality. With the world leaping from crisis to catastrophe to conflict, no wonder viewers don't flock to the gritty issues shows like Parenthood dish up.

Besides the couple with an autistic son, a brief roll call includes a daughter dating an African-American teen who's a reformed alcoholic; a dysfunctional mixed-race couple who are fighting to stay together; a stay-at-home dad who is fighting insecurities; and a family patriarch who comes across as cool but sits on his own powder keg.

"The cast is large and the show is not simplistic, which makes it hard for audiences," says Tim Goodman, television writer for The Hollywood Reporter. "It has some comedy, but there's a lot of yelling. So if that's your own family, you might not want to watch. That said, the quality of the show is just obvious."

Goodman says while Parenthood might be a better fit "on something like TNT, with a run of maybe 13 episodes," it could still break out as a bona fide network hit. "Both Jason (Katims) and Imagine have great track records. And the show's on NBC, which needs a breakout hit and will have more patience than, say, (front-running) CBS might."

When Nelson first read the pilot's script, he immediately had the sense "this was going to be a great show that would not be discovered quickly," he says, puffing on a cigar outside the same soundstage where his 1990s sitcom, Coach, was shot. "But when I do run into people who watch, they seem to love it. It has to do with the way it tells so many stories that feel genuine."

Series lead Peter Krause has been a parent for some time, but he says "being on this show has actually made me a better one." Krause, who plays the clan's unflappable glue-stick, Adam Braverman, says that just as starring in HBO's Six Feet Under became "a five-year meditation for me on death, being on Parenthood has made me pay more attention to the little things in life."

For Katims, the decision to tackle autism has been rewarded by a chorus of fans who appreciate the tactful way the topic is handled. A scan of posts on BabyCenter.com's Parenthood fan club page shows comments such as, "The writers are so wonderful, they really 'get it,' " and, "I watch Max (Braverman) and see so much of my own son."

Katims fiercely rebuts the notion that Parenthood's realism makes it a less viable option for viewers seeking escapism.

"In its day, thirtysomething had an element of fantasy and wish fulfillment, which was a bunch of friends in their 30s who would still show up at each other's houses unannounced as if they were teens," says Katims, whose mentors and early employers were thitysomething producers Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz.

"Parenthood is a bunch of kids who've gone off to create their own families but are still a unit and still drop by and are there for each other," he says. "For many of us, that's a fantasy."

Far from being down on the future of high-quality dramas on television, Katims says the growing number of cable channels getting into scripted dramas bodes well for the genre. "Network audiences are diminishing in general, and audiences overall are very sophisticated," he says. "Maybe the place to go (for dramas) will be the HBOs, Showtimes and AMCs of the world."

Indeed, "you have to be very careful how you define success or failure on TV these days," says Herskovitz, who runs feature-film-focused Bedford Falls Productions with Zwick. "Cable networks are fine with the kind of audience Parenthood gets now for NBC, because they already have an economic model that works for them," he says, noting thirtysomething was constantly under threat of cancellation by ABC throughout its 1987-91 run. "But networks are like aircraft carriers; they're hard to turn fast and don't like taking chances."

'Controlled looseness'

That's something the cast of Parenthood isn't afraid to do.

Nelson says the caliber of the actors ? including Bonnie Bedelia as matriarch Camille, Dax Shepard as lovable screw-up Crosby and Monica Potter as earnest Kristina ? means "everyone's always prepared, so we have time to play with scenes if needed."

Katims encourages the actors to bring ideas to the set, which explains why Graham and Whitman's bedroom scene, once cameras are rolling, unfolds five different ways over the course of five takes. When the naturally goofy Graham-as-Sarah tries to reassure her daughter, Amber Holt (Whitman), that a play she has written isn't a scathing tell-all, her various ad libs include "Don't worry, it's called Mommy Dearest. I hope that's OK," and, "It's not about you, it's about a girl named Bamber Bolt, no one will know." Each time Whitman laughs, it's for real.

During a break in shooting, former Gilmore GirlGraham jokes that the outtakes on future Parenthood DVDs will be longer than the episodes themselves.

"There's a controlled looseness on the set that's encouraged, and we all bring something to the party," she says. "I think there is reality in what we're creating. But I think (viewers) are out of the habit of being confronted with their own lives on TV. I grew up watching thirtysomething, and sometimes I wonder where are those shows today."

Graham pauses, then sinks deeper into a couch on the set, as if hunkering down for the long haul. "It's almost like we're one of those shows from the old days," she says. "Which, personally, I think is a good thing."

Dancing With the Stars' Kirstie Alley: "I Feel Mediocre"

After last week's breakout performance on Dancing With the Stars, Kirstie Alley was hoping to build on her success with even high scores this week, but it didn't happen, and the always quotable actress wasn't shy about admitting that she struggled some this week: "I feel mediocre. I'm telling you the truth. I know what steps I missed, I know what I screwed up on, so?that's all. I wasn't as tired [as I was last week], the stamina's gone up a bit, but this dance is hard! Who the hell walks around like this? Nobody walks like this!" (It's true: The quickstep has tripped up greater dancers than Alley!)

Meanwhile, which dancer has all but given up hope of success, and which dancer is living the fairy tale?

WANT MORE: Follow @JenniferArrow on Twitter

Is Mike Catherwood being too hard on himself, or is he just being realistic when he says, "I'm starting to realize something: I may want to rethink this dancing thing. Even if I make it through next week, I might want to find some other way to entertain the people.I'm not very good...It's hard to feel confidence. Let me put it this way: I know that I don't have the biggest fanbase, in fact I probably have the lowest fanbase of anybody here on the show, and I now know that I have the collectively lowest score. Lowest score and the lowest fanbase?what is there to be confident about, my friend?I gave it all I got and I think people can respect that." Aww, we sure can. Cheers to you, Psycho Mike!

Another dancer who's taking the experience personally is Kendra Wilkinson-Baskett. Hef's former lady (who was also cheered on tonight by fellow Mansion alum Holly Madison) says, "I am going through this stage in my life where I'm going to blossom into a lady?not just a hot girl, but a lady, an elegant lady. [This is] not only for dancing but for my husband and my son, and just me. And it's emotional."

As evidence of her success becoming an "elegant lady,"Kendra got some kind words from judge Carrie Ann Inaba about her look, to which the E! star responded, "That made me feel really good, and I know they know how I feel, they know I'm just coming out here and being real. I'm not fake. I'm not coming out here with some big ego. And they know that. They know how to talk to me, and I appreciate that."

Also appreciating notes from the judges was adorkable charmer Ralph Macchio, who said of this week's lower scores from the judges, "I think the notes were constructive, and I'll take the notes that were positive, [as well as] the notes that there was room for improvement. I think there's places to build from on that. And this number was high-energy, high-intensity, the choreography was not simple?we challenged ourselves?and we delivered all the hard work that we had put in. The crowd seemed behind us and I had fun. The main thing is to have fun."

Personal enjoyment, of course, does seem to be the pinnacle of the DWTS experience, and two other celebs who struggled on the floor didn't let their footwork failures get them down. Talk-show hostWendy Williams told us, "I felt great last week and I feel great this week. You will never see me cop to last week's 14 score, regardless of what the judges said. This week I felt equally as great and equally as present." And kind-hearted supermodel Petra Nemcova said, "I messed up, I must say, so I was disappointed in myself, but I had amazing time. It was lots of lots of fun."

Which performances did you find most fun? Which dancers are your faves so far this season? Post a comment with your take!
